Dr. Vavken is an internationally trained specialist in orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery with a special interest in the elbow and shoulder. He also has many years of experience in treating adolescent athletes and sports injuries during growth. Born and raised in Austria, he studied medicine in Vienna and epidemiology in London. Specialty training in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic trauma in Austria, the US, and Switzerland followed. Subsequently, he completed further training and fellowships in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder and elbow surgery and elbow arthroscopy.

Core competencies
Before joining alphaclinic, Dr. Vavken worked as an attending orthopedic surgeon in shoulder and elbow surgery as well as upper extremity traumatology at the University Hospital Basel and the University Children’s Hospital Basel. Dr. Vavken also gathered experience working as an orthopedic sports medicine specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital for a number of years. He treated numerous athletes with shoulder problems and unstable joints and covered multiple sports teams and events, including the Boston Ballet and the Boston Marathon.
