Further information

Portrait – Interview:
In 1989, Dr Alain Mottaz obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne, and he subsequently became a FMH specialist in Urology in 1998. Dr Mottaz was initially involved in basic clinical research, mainly focusing on prostate cancer, during a stay of almost 2 years at the Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas, USA). Upon his return to Switzerland, he took charge of a research unit at the Clinical and Experimental Research Institute at the University of Bern. While continuing his urological surgery practice, he has continued his research work – he is the author of more than 35 publications. In 1996, Dr Mottaz received a European certification in andrology and became a member of the European Board of Urology in 1998. He is also a member of the American Urological Association. In 2005, he became the co-founder of Gene Predictis, a start-up located in the EPFL Innovation Park in Lausanne. Since then, in parallel with his work as a urological surgeon, he has been involved in the development of predictive and preventive medicine based on genetic analysis. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Gene Predictis SA. He currently practices urology at the Centre Lémanique d’Urologie in Lausanne together with three other specialist colleagues. Dr Mottaz is married with three children, and lives in the Lutry region, which he appreciates for its beauty and proximity to town.

Why choose this career?
At the time, I hesitated between law and medicine, but as my academic focus was on science, I thought it might be too much of a hurdle to study Latin in order to embark on law studies. My attraction to surgery and my need for human contact finally made me decide to study medicine. My specialisation in urological surgery then emerged, offering the possibility of combining a consultant’s practice with surgery.
What has been your greatest challenge?
My training at the University clinic at the Insel Hospital in Bern, under Professors Zingg and Studer. It was a challenge, in family, language and scientific terms!
What has been your greatest success?
Without a doubt, my children!
What are your strengths?
Empathy, having a global vision of my patients and my attraction to technology.
What skill would you like to have?
The ability to be everywhere at once!
What are your passions, your hobbies?
Sport, and cross-country skiing and motorsport in particular. I am also a great wine lover.
Are you involved in humanitarian initiatives as part of your work?
(Smile) I devote my attention to human beings every day… but as part of humanitarian missions in other countries
