MCI Clinical Services Report 2021

On the basis of the International Quality Indicator Project, the Hirslanden Group surveys the main indicators «Unplanned re-admission», «Unplanned re-operation», «Documented falls», and «Bedsores», thus making an important contribution towards assessing outcome quality in medicine.
These key figures are relevant for determining possible improvement measures and thus ensure a continuous optimisation process. Two things are to be taken into account when interpreting the measurements: Firstly, the differences between the hospitals must be interpreted with regard to the respective services they offer. Secondly, a robust trend statement is only possible in a multi-year comparison, as the changes measured annually are smaller than the confidence intervals. These confidence intervals indicate the range within which the true value most likely (95%) lies. The length of the confidence interval depends on multiple factors. The frequency of the incident type observed has a particularly great influence. The more rarely it occurs, the wider the confidence interval is.
Patients with multiple illnesses have an increased risk of unplanned re-admission. Even if the re-admission cannot be prevented completely, the graph shows that we have been able to continuously reduce the rate in the last three years.

The unplanned return of a patient to surgery can have various causes and may be due to the patient’s illness or diagnosis and the resulting risk of complications. An unplanned return to surgery is not always unavoidable. The interdisciplinary treatment team strives to keep the risk of a return to surgery as low as possible. The graph shows that, despite the number of operations increasing each year, the current rate continues to be just under 1%.

Falls in healthcare institutions are a patient safety risk and can largely be avoided with multifactorial interventions. The recording of falls, what leads up to them and their consequences helps us to improve fall prevention. As a healthcare institution, we are required to concern ourselves with the topic of falls, strategically establish fall prevention in companies as part of quality assurance and boost the awareness of interdisciplinarity for this topic.

Any skin lesion caused by sustained pressure and leading to a destruction of the underlying tissue is known as a bedsore. A bedsore, also known as decubitus, mostly occurs over bony prominences and is divided into stages or severities based on the degree of the observed tissue injury. As shown in the graph, we have been able to continuously reduce the average rate of bedsores since 2018.
