Giving Birth at Klinik Hirslanden
The time before you are admitted to hospital is a time to prepare. We spare no effort to ensure that you are able to look forward to the happy event in a relaxed and carefree manner.
Information evening "The birth experience"
You are very welcome to take part in our public information evening entitled “The birth experience”. You will receive valuable information from gynaecologist, paediatrician, anaesthetist, midwife and nurse present on the range of services at our maternity unit and on Klinik Hirslanden’s services before, during and after the birth. You will also have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the facilities of our maternity unit by taking a guided tour. In this way, you will feel as though you are in good hands right from the time you are admitted. Please note that the information evening is only held in German.
Information on the Information evening entitled "The birth experience" is available here.
Visiting the maternity unit
You can have a personal tour of our maternity unit around the clock, from Monday to Sunday. We are unable to arrange appointments as we cannot plan when our delivery rooms are going to be occupied. Please feel free to call our midwives on T +41 44 387 35 61 about an hour before your visit and ask whether it is possible to have a tour. If a delivery room is available, you can stop by directly afterwards. Personal tours are offered in German and English.
Midwife consultations take place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ring T +41 44 387 35 61 to arrange an appointment. Our services are provided independent of your insurance status and invoiced on a time and material basis. Consultations cost between CHF 50.00 and CHF 70.00. The costs are partly covered by health insurance.
Consultation with a midwife
Your birth-related needs and concerns are important to us. We will invite you to a consultation with a midwife around four weeks before the birth so we can adapt the care to your individual needs and address any questions you may have. The responsible midwife will discuss the birth plan and possible birthing positions with you, and inform you about the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of birth.
We carry out antenatal examinations at the request of your doctor. Besides antenatal classes, we also provide advice on natural births or planned caesarean sections. Our physiotherapists and nutritional consultants will also assist you, if necessary.
The peaceful atmosphere in our state-of-the-art designed maternity unit will help you to feel at ease. The midwife will check how your labour is progressing and provide you with active assistance. You can safely place yourself in her hands and concentrate fully on the birth. Your doctor of choice has overall responsibility. He and the midwife will take care of you during the birth process. Your partner or selected support person is most welcome to be present during the birth.
More relaxation, less pain
Be it a soothing compress, a loosening massage, calming aromatherapy or targeted acupuncture to relieve labour pain and to help you relax, we offer you many naturopathic remedies during the birth. If required, conventional pain relief is also available. An anaesthetist is on duty round the clock and can also administer a PDA (epidural anaesthesia) at any time. If one-on-one midwife care can be guaranteed, we also offer you patient-controlled analgesia (Remifentanil PCA).
If required, you may register for an anaesthesia consultation on T +41 44 387 22 99. Please contact us in good time.
Bonding – the first moments together
The time after the birth belongs to you, your partner and your newborn baby. The first hours after the delivery are very important for you and your baby. The midwife will encourage bonding between you and your baby, and assist you with breastfeeding. Your newborn baby recognises your heartbeat, your smell and your voice. He/she receives warmth and security from skin contact. The unique relationship between baby, mother and father is forged during this sensitive phase.
During your stay, the employees of Klinik Hirslanden are there to attend to your needs and those of your baby around the clock. We are guided by your needs and wishes, and we will support you in your new daily routine. You will be gradually introduced to infant care such as nappy changing, bathing, breast-feeding/feeding by the nurse responsible for you. You will learn to recognise and respond to your baby's needs.
The concept of the rooming-in system encourages you and your baby to get to know each other and find a common rhythm. This is an ideal way for you to familiarise yourself with your baby’s needs. If you would like to relax, you can give your baby over into the care of our nursing staff, who will take excellent care of him/her in the nursery.
There is a family room available for patients with private insurance in which the baby's father and a sibling can stay overnight in the mother's room at no extra charge (support person's meals are not included). No prior registration is necessary. Further information is available here.
The visiting hours in two-bed rooms are from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
In single rooms, visitors are also welcome to visit patients over lunchtime or during the evening. They also have the choice of the daily menu as well as other extensive meal and drink offers.
Inpatient breastfeeding counselling
There is always a certified breastfeeding counsellor IBLCL present on the ward from Monday to Sunday, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. She will visit you during your stay, support you if you have difficulty when you start to breastfeed, and answer your questions. Our nursing staff are also trained in breastfeeding counselling and are able to advise and support you professionally.
Outpatient breastfeeding counsellors
Our breastfeeding counsellors are also at your service after you have left hospital. You can reach us round the clock from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm on T +41 44 387 33 86 if you have questions or would like to arrange an appointment for a consultation.
