The prevention of sudden heart death remains one of the challenges in modern rhythmology. A number of major international studies have demonstrated the positive prognostic value of the implantable cardioverter/defibrillator, especially in patients with early myocardial infarction and a very limited pump function and also in patients suffering from cardiac insufficiency with ischaemic and non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy.
