14 CEOs from renowned corporations started EFQM (originally European Foundation for Quality Management) in 1988 with the objective of strengthening the competitiveness of European companies. In this regard, the foundation created a “Business Excellence” model, which has meanwhile developed into Europe’s most widespread quality instrument for companies. The first clinics from the Hirslanden group of private clinics already implemented the EFQM model in 2004 for self-assessment purposes, with the entire group oriented to it in the interim.
The nine criteria, which the EFQM model encompasses, are divided into so-called enabler and
results criteria. These criteria are connected by the following causalities:
Excellent key results, a high degree of customer and employee satisfaction, as well as socially related results stem from a leadership with clear strategic alignment, which refers to employees, partnerships and controlled processes.
The EFQM model has a holistic view of the correlation between cause and effects. Where sustainability is concerned, the EFQM model is also based on the expansion of PDCA. Aided by this systematic assessment of planned procedures, as well as the implementation, evaluation and review of results, the EFQM model creates a transparent degree of implementation.
The EFQM model primarily serves companies with regard to their self-evaluation. However, there is also the option of third-party evaluation through external assessors specialised in the model’s application. They are able to accurately assess the extent to which a company fulfils the model’s specified criteria.
Hirslanden is convinced that orientation to “Business Excellence” in accordance with EFQM would contribute to the sustainable success of the individual clinics as well as to that of the entire group, whereby success is not alone exhausted by the achievement of the qualitative and economic objectives - other integral components are a high degree of customer and employees satisfaction, as well as the fulfilment of social responsibility.
