Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)

The WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) is a measure of the fat distribution in the body. It is calculated by dividing the waist circumference (in cm) by the hip circumference (in cm).

 

The hip circumference is measured at the point of the widest part of the hip, and the waist circumference is measured exactly in the middle between the lower edge of the ribs and the upper edge of the pelvis.

 

Principally, two forms of fat distribution are recognised:

  • The "apple-shaped" person has a rounded stomach and slim hips, and thus a tendency towards a higher WHR. The "apple-shaped" person stores body fat in the middle of the body, i.e. in the stomach and chest area. Men are more prone to have an "apple-shaped" figure.
  • The "pear-shaped" person has a narrow waist, wide hips and generous thighs, and thus has a tendency towards a lower WHR. Body fat for such types is mainly stored on the hips, legs and upper arms. Women are more likely to have a "pear-shaped" figure.

 

There is an increased risk of heart and circulatory illness for women with a WHR of 0.85 and over and for men of 1.0 and over.
