The emergency unit at Klinik Im Park is open 24/7, 365 days a year. It is the point of contact for all adult medical emergencies (from the age of 16) and is open to patients of all insurance classes. It covers the entire spectrum of medical and surgical emergencies and combines the fields of Internal Medicine and Surgery. Excluded from this is the treatment of polytraumatised patients, i.e. those with life-threatening multiple injuries.
The patients are provided with first-class care by our specialists. The initial assessment of an emergency patient is performed by an internist with additional experience in surgery and traumatology. Depending on the circumstances, he or she will summon a further on-call specialist, for example in head medicine, cardiology, abdominal medicine or emergency surgery.
The branch of internal medicine comprises a very wide range of medical know-how about disorders that can afflict the young, adults and the elderly. This specialist knows about all the common ways of testing for disorders, such as blood and urine tests and the use of X-rays, and determines which method should be used. He is able to select the correct mode of treatment. Where necessary he looks after his chronically-ill patients over a long period of time, even at home or in a hospice or care-home. An internist can also carry out minor operations, such as the stitching of wounds under local anaesthetic.
Where special treatment is needed, he hands his patients over to other specialists who have the appropriate training.
Internist training often represents the basis for further training in areas such as cardiology, rheumatology or gastroenterology.
Emergency medicine in Switzerland encompasses preclinical emergency medicine outside hospitals and clinical emergency medicine in hospital.
Emergencies are defined as changes in the state of health due to illness and/or accident for which the patient himself or a third person judges immediate medical help necessary. Clinical emergency medicine is practiced in hospital emergency departments and accident and emergency admissions. The services required of any emergency department must take into account the respective local conditions and, therefore, must be site specific; nevertheless, triage, emergency diagnostic investigations, emergency treatment and, if necessary, the transfer of the patient to a specialised institution all form part of the joint task of all emergency departments.
These tasks define the core area of emergency medicine and differentiate it from other medical specialties.
