38th week of pregnancy

  • Biparietal diameter of foetus: 89 to 102 mm
  • Weight of foetus: approx. 3150 g
  • Length of foetus: approx. 48 cm

If a caesarean is planned, it will probably take place during this week.

Your baby has matured in every respect. All organs are completely developed and functioning. Fat padding has developed, and lanugo hair and vernix caseosa have mostly disappeared. All the senses have developed sufficiently, too. If your baby is born now, it doesn’t count as a premature birth.

The large cranial sutures on the head of your child only ossify during the course of the first year after birth. They can be pushed together a little during passage through the birth canal, which makes the birth easier. The diamond-shaped gaps in the bone, which are only covered by skin, are called fontanels. The large fontanel will be closed within approx. 18 months of birth.
