Urology is the medical science and discipline concerned with the structure, function, and diseases of the urinary organs as well as the male reproductive organs. The urologist is familiar with diseases affecting these organs (such as prostate cancer) and understands which conditions of other organs in the body may have an impact on the urinary or reproductive system.
These mainly include diseases of the prostate and bladder, as well as kidney stones. Various specialized methods are used to diagnose urological conditions, such as urine analysis, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
For treatment, a range of medications is available. If necessary, surgical procedures may also be performed, for example the fragmentation of kidney stones or the removal of an enlarged prostate through the urethra.
