The gastroenterologist’s specialty includes the esophagus, stomach, and intestinal tract, as well as the liver with the gallbladder and the pancreas. Commonly treated conditions in this field include hemorrhoids, inguinal hernias, and Crohn’s disease.

It is particularly important for this specialist to be familiar with the various diagnostic methods used to examine these organs. The esophagus, stomach, and intestines can, for example, be examined by endoscopy. During this procedure, a tube is inserted through the esophagus into the stomach, with a small camera located at its tip. The images are transmitted to a screen, where the physician evaluates them and makes a corresponding diagnosis. The same applies to images of the liver, which can be obtained using ultrasound.

For the treatment of these conditions, the gastroenterologist may choose medical therapy or surgery. For surgical procedures, they work closely with visceral surgeons. They also advise patients, for example on future dietary habits.
