• Laser probe

    Round, plastic tube measuring 0.8 to 1 cm in diameter which emits a laser light. It excises tissue to a depth of one millimetre. The tube is inserted via the electrode and cuts around it freely.

    Side-on, averted from the middle of the body.
  • Lesion

    Pathological damage or injury to tissue.
  • Leukaemia

    Blood cancer.
  • Liver metastases

    Dissemination of individual cells which have detached themselves from the cell layers of a malignant tumour. They flow into the liver in the blood, where they are held in the vascular bed. There they multiply and form metastases.
  • Liver resection

    Removal of the liver.
  • Local anaesthesia

    Localised numbing of the body without anaesthesia.
  • Local anaesthetic

    Locally administered sedative.
  • Lochia

    Vaginal discharge after giving birth. Lasts for around one week.
  • Low-grade glioma

    Less aggressive brain tumour which is found in young adults in particular. It is asymptomatic over a longer period; it usually becomes symptomatic as a result of an epileptic episode. The choice of treatment is radical removal of the tumour, where possible.
  • Lymphadenectomy

    Removal of lymph nodes.
