NeuroSpineZurich examines between 600 and 1 000 patients every year. The neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. med. Urs D. Schmid and orthopaedic surgeon Prof. Dr. med. Sebastian Weckbach perform more than 400 open spine operations annually at Hirslanden Klinik Im Park, Triemli Hospital and Affoltern Hospital.

Disease patterns

The NeuroSpineZurich practice carries out spinal examinations and treatments in collaboration with in-house and external neurologists, rheumatologists and neuroradiologists.

Examination and treatment of the following clinical pictures/diagnoses

  • Slipped disc (herniated disc)
  • Spinal stenosis (spinal canal stenosis)
  • Slipped vertebrae (spondylolisthesis)
  • Tumours (neuroma, meningioma, ependymoma, metastasis)

Examination and treatment of the following symptoms

  • Paralysis (paraplegia, paraparesis, tetraparesis, paralysis of the arm, paralysis of the leg, cauda equina syndrome)
  • Ischias pain
  • Radicular syndrome (lumbago with sciatica)
  • Shoulder/arm pain (cervical brachialgia)
  • Cauda syndrome
  • Spinal cord damage (myelopathy)
  • Gait disorders, unsteady gait

Treatment methods

Microsurgery of the entire spine with or without spinal fusion, including intraoperative neuromonitoring for tumours, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and instability.

Cervical spine

  • Microsurgical intervertebral disc surgery (microdiscectomy)
  • Fusion using a disc cage (cage treatment)
  • Mobility retention using prosthetic discs (artificial intervertebral discs)
  • Spinal decompression surgery without fusion (laminectomy)
  • Enlarging the spinal canal (laminoplasty)
  • Herniated disc surgery without an implant (foraminotomy)
  • Minimally invasive nerve tumour removal with neuromonitoring
  • Treatment of inflammation and infections

Lumbar spine and thoracic spine

  • Microsurgical intervertebral disc surgery (microdiscectomy)
  • Spinal fusion (spondylodesis)
  • Minimally invasive nerve tumour removal with neuromonitoring
  • Treatment of inflammation and infections
