We undertake comprehensive quality measurements to ensure the quality of treatment and patient safety. We orient ourselves here towards clinical key figures, the indicator system for which has been developed and improved over years, as well as national and international health regulations.

Based on the same surveys per hospital, hospitals with a similar service spectrum can be compared with each other and a specific benchmarking can be derived from this. This benchmarking helps when assessing services and defining measures for the continuous improvement both of the treatment quality and patient safety. Last but not least, the survey of national and international indicators also enables a comparison with hospitals within Switzerland and abroad.

Quality Healthcare Initiative (QHI)

In the Quality Healthcare Initiative, all of the Hirslanden hospitals are committed to better medical quality.

Mortality in intensive care

Hirslanden collects the mortality rate on the intensive care ward using the data set of the Swiss Society for Intensive Care Medicine (= minimum data set of the SGI; MDSi). This minimum data set MDSi enables the individual wards to analyse their processes and compare themselves with other wards within the framework of benchmarking. The aim is to be able to recognise one's own strengths and weaknesses and thus ultimately optimise patient care. This shows that Hirslanden hospitals have already been achieving significantly better figures than the Swiss average for several years when comparing effective mortality with expected mortality.

      Infection prevention

The Hirslanden Group measures infections using two different methods. KISS (Hospital Infection Surveillance System) in intensive care and SwissNoso on wards. KISS is the world’s largest database on nosocomial infections. These are infections that are temporally or causally related to inpatient or outpatient care. That is why KISS offers the best comparison opportunities. SwissNoso offers a national benchmark.

Infections often occur in association with a catheter or canula. In intensive care, these so-called device-associated infections include the number of septic diseases associated with central venous catheters, the number of urinary tract infections associated with urinary catheters and the number of pneumonia cases associated with ventilation.

Hand hygiene is one of the measures to prevent infection. It represents by far the most important element of the standard hygiene measures, as most of the infectious agents acquired in hospital are transmitted via direct contact and predominantly via the hands.

National programme for recording post-operative wound infections

In the interests of patient safety and for quality control purposes, wound infections after certain types of surgery are systematically recorded in a preventive programme in all Hirslanden hospitals. If you take part in this programme, a Hirslanden employee will contact you after approximately 30 or 90 days, depending on the type of surgery, to ask you a few questions about the wound healing process and your well-being. Please note that these interviews will be conducted via the Hirslanden Group telephone number +41 44 387 22 82. Thank you for taking the call.

      Urinary catheter-associated infection

A catheter-associated urinary tract infection is caused by a urinary catheter: urinary catheters are often used in hospitals and are a source of infection. In specific terms, this means that an infection can be caused by invading pathogens.

      Ventilator-associated pneumonia

Ventilator-associated pneumonia can occur in patients who undergo artificial respiration: this process enables germs to enter the lower respiratory tract, colonise the lungs, and cause pneumonia.

      Results

On the basis of the International Quality Indicator Project, the Hirslanden Group surveys the main indicators unplanned re-admission, unplanned re-operation, documented falls, and bedsores, thus making an important contribution towards assessing outcome quality in medicine.

These key figures are relevant for determining possible improvement measures and thus ensure a continuous optimisation process. When interpreting the measurements, it should be noted that the differences between the hospitals must be interpreted with regard to the respective services they offer.

      Unplanned readmission

Patients with multiple illnesses have an increased risk of unplanned re-admission. Even if the re-admission cannot be prevented completely, the graph shows that we have been able to continuously reduce the rate in the last three years.

Unplanned return to the operating theatre

The unplanned return of a patient to surgery can have various causes and may be due to the patient’s illness or diagnosis and the resulting risk of complications. An unplanned return to surgery is not always unavoidable. The interdisciplinary treatment team strives to keep the risk of a return to surgery as low as possible. The graph shows that, despite the number of operations increasing each year, the current rate continues to be just under 1%.

              Documented falls

Falls in healthcare institutions are a patient safety risk and can largely be avoided with multifactorial interventions. The recording of falls, what leads up to them and their consequences helps us to improve fall prevention. As a healthcare institution, we are required to concern ourselves with the topic of falls, strategically establish fall prevention in companies as part of quality assurance and boost the awareness of interdisciplinarity for this topic.

                  Pressure ulcers

Any skin lesion caused by sustained pressure and leading to a destruction of the underlying tissue is known as a bedsore. A bedsore, also known as decubitus, mostly occurs over bony prominences and is divided into stages or severities based on the degree of the observed tissue injury. As shown in the graph, we have been able to continuously reduce the average rate of bedsores since 2018.
