The pelvic floor center offers all the necessary tests to obtain a reliable and accurate diagnosis.

Clinical examination

Clinical examination is the first step in diagnosis. It is performed in a gynecological position or standing if necessary. It makes it possible to locate sensitive or painful areas, and to obtain an evaluation of the muscular and neurological function of the perineum.

Perineal ultrasound

This very specific examination is painless, and can be performed in the office by the urogynecology specialist. This test allows, by placing a probe between the anus and the vagina, to visualize from the outside the muscles of the pelvic floor and their movements.

Urodynamic balance

This assessment is carried out following various tests that repeat the volumes, pressures and urine flows in order to grasp the mechanism of the bladder.

Cystoscopy

This examination analyzes the urethra and bladder, using a probe equipped with a mini-camera and a light, which is introduced into the urinary canal after local anesthesia. It lasts a few minutes, and can be a bit unpleasant.

Anorectal physiology tests

In addition to perineal ultrasound, endoanal ultrasound and anorectal manometry may be necessary. These investigations are carried out in people suffering from incontinence, organ descent, suspected damage to the sphincters and muscles or in case of severe constipation.  These tests aim to better characterize the structure and function of the rectum, anal canal and muscles of the perineum. These examinations do not require any special preparation and have no side effects.

Endoanal ultrasound

This test looks at the structure of the sphincter muscles of the anus and the lower part of the rectum. A finger-sized probe is inserted into the anal canal over a length of about 5 cm. This test is not pleasant but is not painful. The exam lasts only a few minutes.

An anorectal manometry

This test allows, by means of small sensors, to measure the strength of the sphincters during contraction and rest. The probe is the size of a straw. A small balloon inserted into the rectum makes it possible to assess its sensitivity to distention.

Other examinations (CT, MRI, etc.) can be performed in our imaging centers at Hirslanden Clinique des Grangettes within the women's imaging center.
