ERCP is a method used to identify and treat diseases of the biliary and pancreatic ducts. It involves a combined endoscopic and radiological examination in order to see an image of the biliary and pancreatic ducts. A flexible endoscope (mirror) is inserted via the mouth, throat and stomach into the duodenum, into which the biliary and pancreatic ducts open.
With the aid of a contrast agent, the examination shows an X-ray image of the hepatobiliary system and the pancreas. ECRPs are used to show up gall stones, the narrowing or inflammation of the pancreatic ducts or a biliary obstruction. At the same time, gallstones may be removed and narrowed ducts expanded using stents.
